Contrary to popular belief, this was not stolen from Cyanide & Happiness. Feel free to draw your own conclusions, but I have never read that strip before it was pointed out to me.

I have nothing to apologize for besides not coming up with an original idea first.

So I’m like a year late here, but anyway to me the answer is simple.

Nobody stole it from anyone, because Enzo and Rob Denbleyker BOTH fantasize about violating snowmen! :D

I haven't read that strip before. So, no, it's not stolen. I did not blatantly read Cyanide & Happiness and say "I am going to take this strip and re-make it". If you want me to give credit to them for an idea I legitimately thought up myself just because they thought of it first, then fine, and I apologize, but I did not STEAL it. At the very LEAST, I used an unoriginal joke. Sue me, please.

I think it's a classic case of "the Simpsons did it already".

I don't even follow Cyanide & Happiness. I've read maybe their first two years of strips but nothing after that.

To all geniuses up there: It isn't that hard for two separate people to come up with this idea in WINTER.

To Enzo: Bad luck, bad timing. Not your fault, webcomic is great though, one of my favorites now.

        THANK YOU, JFB.

Okay. Let me share the thought process that went into the making of this comic.

I was having a cigarette, looking out the window at all the snow on the ground. Oh hey, there's that misshapen pile of snow on my front lawn that bears reminder to my failed attempt at building my own snowman. Oh hey, wouldn't it be funny if I drew someone trying to violate a snowman? What would happen? He'd probably get frostbite. Oh shit! I should draw that!

I agree, it's completely bad timing. Do you think this strip would have generated the same animosity if I had done it a year later CY&H's strip? What if I had done it BEFORE them? Would people have bitched THEM out for "stealing"? Probably not.

In all interest of fairness, though, it's a really easy joke. ANYONE could have thought of it, I'm sure a lot of people HAVE already. It just so happened two separate cartoonists chose to draw two separate strips in the space of, what a month of each other, and it just so happens the one who drew it FIRST is the one who's more popular.

Oh, and to stress this just in case we get any more misguided fanboys -I have nothing against CY&H, and I certainly have a lot of love and respect for them as a fellow webcomic.

Seems awfully sketchy, considering the exact same facial expression in the third panel, and quote from the last panel.

Plagiarism is still plagiarism, even if it is not intentional.

    • Enzo

      wrote on at :

I don't think it's possible to plagiarize something I've never seen before.

What do you want me to say, honestly? Why would I lie about something like this? I gain absolutely nothing from it aside from a few more pageviews from angry CY&H fans.

    • Roxette

      wrote on at :
      Thumb up Thumb down 0

      Oh Pat,

This is such an easy joke, and there aren't many options to the direction it can take. Having the exact same expression and quote CLEARLY shows that Enzo couldn't have seen the C&H comic.

We all know C&H is a popular comic. Enzo is aware of it's well standing…. So why in hell would he purposely copy it so exactly when there is no way in hell he would get away with it! Everyone would bite him in the ass – which is what you're trying to do! No one would purposely put themselves in that situation my dear. Sigh.

Come on pat, think about it. It's really not that hard to understand.

    • Illumi

What exactly do you remember about my "original" post, then, before I edited it? It's just a little sad that you are making money off of a joke that someone else made first. You took the punchline word for word. And you don't have enough dignity to take it down? This is why people are sued for plagiarism.

This seems like a good place to let the whole commotion end, but my two cents is that the set up is different and easier to believe why the character did what he did in this one than the other one. He also looks cold in the last panel. I don't care I like this one better.

    • Enzo

      wrote on at :

Thanks so much. I think that was one of the problems in a situation like this — people choose to focus on the similarities between the two strips instead of appreciating the differences between them.

I mean, after all, everything is a repost of a repost, right?

      • Illumi

        wrote on at :

Why is he naked? His skin is visibly purple in the last strip, so he must not be wearing pants. Did he streak all the way to the doctor’s with frostbite on his crotch? And frostbite doesn’t happen immediately. He must have been REALLY lonely to fuck something freezing cold long enough to get frostbite. And again, I have to ask the question: Is this Zeke or Frank, or somebody else entirely. If this is based on your life… dude, you need to get a girlfriend, or at least some porn. And it may have a bow on, but its still a snowMAN!

I have to apologize for Pat's behavior… you see, he is a shut in who lives in his Mother's basement because she feels sorry for his 'eating disorder' which makes him grotesquely overweight, and she sedates his 'depression anxiety' with brownies and fudge cake. Meanwhile he trolls comics and forums making others feel bad to make himself feel better.

Anywho.. I read about 9 different comics regularly since I have hour long breaks in between my classes and this is most definitely better than C&H's, and I love both comics, but your comics are making their way up my list fast. Keep up the good work.

P.S. To all you r-tards out there, it's an old joke. You are probably the same people that play a different MMO besides WoW and whine about how WoW has a feature that your game implemented and their are obviously copying WoW.

    Same shit different asshole.

    • Roxette

      wrote on at :
      Thumb up Thumb down 0

      HAHAHA.

I agree with Colby… this is such an easy joke and can so easily have been recycled by anyone without even knowing it already "officially" existed in print.

People think alike, and whether we like it or not, someone puts the food on the table faster. In this case, C&H did, and it doesn't necessarily mean it was never been used/thought of before.

12 year olds going through puberty and frolicking through the snow all over the world could've thought of this joke. And hell, my college roommates hump snowmen just for shits and giggles – and get their generals frostbite all the time!

The punchline IS dead on, which clearly proves that Enzo COULDN'T have "stolen" this idea. No person in their right mind would take an idea and use the same words by a very popular comic (C&H) and expect to get away with it!

So enough with all the plagiarism and suing nonsense and just cheer the fxck up kids. No need for any apologies from Enzo.

C&H and CUEK are both great.
Don't fight them, support them and keep us laughing, whoa-ing and aw-ing.

I also initially thought it was a nice tribute to the C&H comic… they made it a bit of a running gag themselves and thought this actually fit as a nice continuance… you know, cause I am naive enough to believe everyone on the web gets along and like to play nice and in a broad communal 'we are all humans' kind of way are actually friends sharing the crazy ride called life. It was fun to pretend for a few moments there weren't people online who make it their sole purpose to try and insult and degrade people who provide free entertainment for the enjoyment of others.
