I noticed while going through the demographics of all the visitors to CUEK that 52% of all the visitors from the US were female. This was quite intriguing to me!

Mainly because I’ve always felt that, in the majority of the strips — especially the ones before the introduction of Jade (yes, that’s Purple’s real name) in #46 — the females were either the butt of the intended joke, the object of ridicule, or depicted as a bitch or a liar or a slut or something along those lines. Not that I hate women or feel a need for them to be constantly ridiculed (in truth, it’s just one or two specific women, but that’s not the point). I just, you know, thought that I was always relating to a more male audience since that’s my personal perspective.

I mean, I’m not unwelcoming to the female audience as well, it just came as a bit of a surprise!

I suppose I’m that closed-minded that I’ve never taken the time to look at relationships from a female point of view. But since I was 15 I have been in four serious “relationships” (quoted, because only two of them were “official”) and all of them ended terribly. Which doesn’t leave me much of a perspective to go on aside from the stereotypical “THAT BITCH WAS A HO” standpoint.

What’s the plural of “ho”, anyway? Hos? Ho’s? Hoes? This is going to bug me all day.

So if you’re a female, and you’ve wasted the few minutes it took to read this, tell me: Why do you read CUEK? Join the forum discussion on this post – (38) Posts

HOES it is. have peace now.

    I’m female. I’m from Australia.
And I think this is one of the best sites ever.
I couldn’t care less if you insulted Australian females, infact for your next comic strip I dare you!
xD Now that would be a laugh.

  3. RinnaRainbowlicious

The reason I read CUEK is because it’s fucking amazing. So what if it pokes fun at females being completely insensitive and ignorant of how they might be hurting their exes? We all know it’s completely true, however sometimes exaggerated.
Frankly, I feel for all of your mildly psychotic characters. Zeke for being so damn lost and heartbroken; Jade for having to put up with his crap and Red Bowed Girl’s constant meddling in their life; Frank because guys with attitudes like him are in fact pretty rare–most of the time, guys just think with their dicks, not their heads. And of course, I feel even kinda sorry for the Red Bowed Girl. Just because she’s such a freaking lunatic; she doesn’t know any better.
    *sigh*.
    Okay. Ramble’s over. :D
Basically, I’m just not one of the people that make stupid arguments when the truth is placed in front of them.
And that is why I adore CUEK. :]

  4. Jade

Y’know, before I even dated you I liked the comic. I always like to keep an open mind and I’m never big on ridiculing a specific gender, but comics are meant to be humorous. So why would I, as an audience, try to make it otherwise? Even though the comics are merely based on your own real life, and there are some truths to the things happening or said, it’s still a comic. If anything, your comics are a little “in your face”, an action people really need on the receiving end for reality checks.

Besides, you got a wit about it and that definitely enforces the comedic aspect. Now if only I can get a crack at the rl red bow…oh and yes, them bitches and hoes deserve to be labeled just that for obvious reasons.

And y’know what? Try looking at things from a female’s perspective. A lot of things are actually in common with males, yet some things aren’t. You really need to dig in and hear females out to understand their perspectives when they’re being girls, just like how girls should think about how it is for guys. Females are known to analyze things. Males are known to take things for what it is. Etc.

  5. Female Reader

Reading your perspective on your own blog was actually surprising; in my mind, the male characters of CUEK are just as, if not more, hilariously ridiculed as the female ones. In fact, a lot of your cartoons seem to highlight relationship issues usually attributed to the girl, for example the one on committment.

If women are portrayed as unstable and changeable, then men are depicted as stupid and tactless. These characteristics are of course stereotypes, but seeing as you apply them (or so I thought) equally to both, I would never have thought of it as sexist.

Basically, I never thought you ‘picked on’ one gender over the other – generally I find your comic hilarious because it seems to highlight the universal and fundamental stupidity of humanity in general!
Male, female, obese chicks or strange crabs … it’s just plain funny. Thats it.

So continue doing what you do so well, and readers (of both ‘persuasions’) are sure to continue enjoying it on alternate days of the week!

  6. TaylerPERRY

I, myself read CUEK because of…
    1. It’s funny
    2. I can relate to it
    3. I like the style of it
    4. Interested in creating webcomics myself
    5. It looks good on my iGoogle home page in the RSS feeds!

Haha, seriously one of the best webcomics out there!

  7. sarah

    I find CUEK hilarious.
I can’t really think of a reason why I love it so much, other than my cynical personality.
    I’m a horrible person. D:

  8. Faith

I read your site because, for the most part, it’s so true. I am extremely sexist, whick makes me biased, but women are completely insane in one way or another. Your work is funny and truthful. I can’t wait to read more ^^

  9. Eleanor

I read CUEK because the jokes are hilarious! Intended at the female species or not it captures the funny side of human nature at it’s darkest, which I like best!

Keep it coming, makes my day when you update (That sounds patheticly sad, oh well)

  10. Me

    It makes me horny

  11. Mel

I read CUEK simply because it is hilarious. Yeah, maybe a lot of the actual topics are serious. But, you turn serious things around to be funny. I’m not sure what it is about CUEK that makes it my absolute favorite comic. Maybe it’s the style, or maybe it’s the sense of humor, but I always look forward to a new strip. And as for making the girls look bitchy or whatever, yeah, maybe they do look that way sometimes. However, the guys don’t always look like angels either. =)

  12. Spambi

Same as others have mentioned–it’s humorous. I don’t think one gender is hurt “more” than the other–I’ve read studies saying things for each.

I DO think it’s easier in the long run for women who have been slighted to recover because they often have a broader support group–everyone from their mothers to their hairdressers have open ears and usually are people girls talk to. It is often easier to recover when you have a strong support group, but guys usually aren’t lucky enough to have that. D:

(I also read it because the layout of the panels and the transitions are pretty and I feel drawn to them haha)

  13. Bekah

I read because scheudenfraude is wonderful. =)

  14. Meg

I read it because its funny and sometimes very true. And like what the person who wrote the 5th comment said, it’s making fun of both sexes, not just females.

And I just realized that sexes backwards is sexes xD

  15. Mexican

    =(
    its actually funny xD

  16. SilentSpring17

I read it because I love the animation and I think it’s hilarious. I love Frank and am overjoyed whenever he is included in the comic. I found this site through FML, read through the archive, fell in love, and am now addicted to it and visit it every day even though I know you only update it 3 times a week. :)

Keep it coming, cause I can’t get enough of it.

  17. ejh123020

well i read it for the same resons the guys read it its hilarious and makes a point plus phyco exs are something everyone can relate to and who cares if the girls in the strips are called sluts and hoes there are girls like that

  18. IToldYouSo

I never really noticed, because of what everyone else said about it picking on both genders and blah blah, but also because it only picks on a couple women, not women as a whole. And I for one, am the type of bitch that enjoys picking on other people – women or men.

Besides, the ones that get made fun of are usually the ones I don’t like.

  19. Anamal91

i saw you on fml and then i started like browsing thru ur site and i loved ur style… ur sense of humour is awesome. Plus i read about ur exes and i can realy relate to you, ive been thru sumthin similar and it hurts like a b itch :(

    but, kudos to you! (~~,)
(and try the animated thing out! hehe)

  20. Deborah

    BECAUSE IT’S HILARIOUS!
Guys are funny, and reading stuff from their point of view make you laugh and smile and sometimes slap your forehead thinking “How could they even THINK about that?!”
It’s so honest and amazing, I don’t know I just love it =)

  21. Brittni

I love CUEK, simply because it’s entertaining! Everyone knows that girls can be bitches, it’s part of our *ahem* charm? Anyway, CUEK tells it like it is, maybe in a cruder way, but that’s the fun of it. (Plus, Frank is the bomb.)

  22. Alisha

Because it’s funny and I am not a “Sally Sensitive” sort of girl. I am a sarcastic bitch, and the humor here fits my style.

  23. Ebony

Why do -as a female from Untied States- read CUEK?

Well, why does everyone else read it? For simply it being ridiculiously funny and just down-to-earth awsome. My friend introduced me to CUEK a few months back when we were both having a bad day at school and we both needed a good laugh. He has been with CUEK since comic strip one and since we both share the same sense of humor, sent me the link to here.

And here I am now. ^^
Keep up the awsome, sadistic humor of CUEK.

  24. mwahaha

i make fun of the bitches and skanks too, even though im a girl…so its funny to see someone else doing it too XD

  25. Katie

I read CUEK because i absolutely love the humor of it. i have an adoration for black humor, and i guess this falls into it pretty well [my fave is halloween-laughed so hard i fell over & laughed on the ground some more]. also, it’s very relateable. girls have to deal with scummy guys in relationships which is just as irritating as some of the girls guys have to deal with. anyway, keep up the great work! i enjoy reading this.

  26. Imagirl

Because girls ARE bitches, and we know it. And this is so funny! I love it!

  27. Hey girl Hey

Because guys aren’t the only ones that sometimes think girls are bitches and hos. (again with the plural ‘ho’ thing… sorry bout that.)

  28. Roxanne

First of all, I am very open to ideas. I’m Asian and a female, I think racist and sexist jokes are funny and don’t take them offensively. Then again, I’m one of those girls who are nice but not pushovers, and I am a ball buster when I need to be – namely when people take me for the latter.
CUEK is one where I relate to Purple/Jade a lot and Enzo’s sense of humor tends to have a lighter and more humorous take on more complicated and dense subjects (although they’re almost always about relationships).
I guess to put simply, I read CUEK because it is amusing, humorous, a little morbid, and always enlightening.
I must say CUEK certainly makes Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays just that a little better :)
Thanks for those good laughs, E!

    xoR

  29. Mika :)

I read because it is freakin’ hilarious! People tell me I think more like a guy than a girl, so maybe that’s part of the reason why? It’s mainly because this is some of the funniest shit I have ever read! XD

  30. chaela

cos its hilarious! and dont worry about offending people, there are some hypersensitive girls out there, but most of us have a similar humor to boys and you do even it up somewhat with the commitment jokes lol

  31. Chrissy

its like.. an illustrated soap opera for me
the drama, love story and sex (all-be-it rare) is all there
not to mention..i’m sure some peoples relationships are
    exactly like the comics
    its funny
    <3

  32. Holly

uh duh!!!!!!!! its funny!!!!!!!!! it is totally untrue and exaggerates a ton, but hey, thats what people do right? plus, i sympathize with frank.

  33. Holly

the animal parts made me really sad too!!!!!!! plus it kind of grossed me out. and it would totally be just as funny even if there was much less swearing.

  34. Holly

never stop making these guys!!!!!!!!!!!!! love them to death!!!!! go the truth!

  38. para_freak

Enzo, CUEK is comic genius :] It’s impossible not to come back and see what new adventures are in store.
I love the lack of romanticism here. Nothing is veiled, you write what you want. It’s very refreshing to see someone who can mock something that has become such an obsession, and have the attitude of “suck it” for anyone who doesn’t appreciate it :]
And I’d like to mention that you shouldn’t ever worry about offending us ladies. Personally, I love seeing our crazy, bitchy, mood swing-filled personalities from a guy’s point of view. Because as much as we’ll deny it, let’s face it. You’ve hit us spot on :]

  39. Randi

Because it’s funny ! It also allows me to think of what some of the guys in my life are probably thinking right now …
anyways. i love CUEK and will continure to read it, if you continue to publish it !

  40. WaitingForThatEmo

i read them cause they’re funny. i am a serious feminist!! but just because im a girl, doesn’t mean i don’t think a good ‘that’s what she said’ joke is funny! i make those jokes all the time, obviously not for myself, but whatever. anyhoo, i like reading these and for the girls you do make fun of, you’re making fun of the bitchy population, which is only part of the girls in this world… and i try not to include myself into that group, though.

    • WaitingForThatEmo

      * Just because i’m a girl doesn’t mean i don’t think a good ‘thats what she said joke isn’t funny.

sorry needed to change the is to isn’t

  41. cantfindagoodname

this is the funniest one yet, keep up the good work

  42. NightSai

I’m a chick I read it cause it’s fun to laugh at ourselves. Women are stuck up bitches and we know it, just like men are stupid pigs and they know it.

  43. Mema4

I read CUEK because i find it freaking hilarious! ^^ and also cause i can think of several people who are like that XD :] especially the vicious cycles. idk i’m different i guess. :3 and my friend sent me a link, and it made me curious to read the rest, so i did. I wasted an entire afternoon reading them. it made my day to do that :]

  44. C

I read this comic for several reasons): one, obviously, because its really funny :)
two, because some girls ARE like the stereotypes you display and when you display it in such a frank manner(haha, i just realized that was an awful pun) it just makes it so much funnier. and three, I like to know(in some sort of sick way) that guys hurt too after a relationship ends. Cheer Up Emo Kid is a perfectly balanced mix of funny, socially awkward, honest, and stupid relationships between family, friends, and significant others.
basically enzo, lets just say i think you made another emo kid cheer up ;)

  45. Indie_McEmopants

Yes well, my kitty give me massages. =p And as a general rule for some unknown reason, dogs hate me. I've lost count how many times I've been chased by an angry dog. And I've been attacked twice.

  46. cupcake_ninja

dogs love you unconditionally unlike cats, who give you much attitude and just generally suck balls.

  47. Indie_McEmopants

Plus you generally don't have to give them baths and you can pretty much leave them alone for the weekend without having to worry.

cats are great! I like them much better than dogs. Cats have the decency to bury their feces.
